Welcome to our lessons on the history of Hebrew.

Hebrew is the oldest language in the world, yet also the youngest language. It was spoken at the beginning of the Creation, yet expanded and modernized only a few generations ago. It is a rich and varied language, capable of expressing all aspects of life in the 21st century, yet simple enough to understand sacred texts written almost 5000 years ago. The Hebrew Scriptures express the mind of God, yet the same language in Israel today is used to express childrens' stories, newspaper articles, comedy, tragedy, love stories, dry legal texts, poetry, popular culture, technology and every other subject area you can think of.

Hebrew is a hugely varied language. The lessons on the following screens will teach you how it all began, and guide you through almost 7000 years of history. We will start at Creation, and end up in the future age, when Hebrew will once again take centre stage as the common language used by mankind.

In addition to our lessons on learning Hebrew, make sure you also take a look at our lessons on the Tanakh!

Our sister site AllThingsAramaic.Com is dedicated to learning Aramaic. Aramaic is very closely related to Hebrew, and is used in Biblical Aramaic, the Targumim (the Aramaic translations of the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible), the Aramaic Old Testament (Peshitta Tanakh), the Aramaic New Testament (Peshitta), the Talmud, the Zohar, as well as some Jewish prayers. There are also lessons on the History of Aramaic.
