In the lesson What Types Of Hebrew Dictionary Are There? we saw that an illustrated Hebrew Dictionary was a possibility. These are designed for children.

There are several differences between an illustrated Hebrew Dictionary aimed at children and a normal Hebrew Dictionary aimed at adults:

  • Clearly, the range of vocabulary is much smaller. A typical Children's Hebrew Dictionary might only contain around 1000 words.
  • The vocabulary is targeted around words connected with everyday life, or focused on home and family life.
  • The illustrations help to capture children's attention and imagination, and provide a lively talking point when adults are sharing the book with them.
  • Unlike an adult's Hebrew Dictionary which is intended as a reference work to look up Hebrew words, a Children's Hebrew Dictionary can be used as a story book. You can sit down with your children and teach them lots of Hebrew words this way!

If you have children, therefore, an illustrated Hebrew Dictionary is a truly excellent way to teach them Hebrew words and introduce them to the Hebrew language. A Children's Hebrew Dictionary makes a great gift.

However, don't assume that an illustrated Hebrew Dictionary is only for children! They are not! For adults too, an illustrated Hebrew Dictionary is a great way to learn Hebrew in the early stages. You won't learn grammar from them, but you will learn a large number of Hebrew words very quickly and effectively. You can test yourself easily by turning to random pages and looking at all the pictures, and seeing whether you know the Hebrew words. As the vocabulary is focused around daily life with the home and family, you will learn relevant words that you will hear around you on a daily basis. For adults learning Hebrew, an illustrated Hebrew Dictionary is a superb way to learn Hebrew in the early stages. Don't underestimate how useful they are.
